Proprietary lattice-engineered III-nitride platform demonstrates redshifts of up to 80 nm in quantum-well emission, opening new possibilities for LEDs and visible lasers.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — November 5, 2026 — Opnovix Corp. today publicly introduced Native InGaN®, its proprietary III-nitride semiconductor platform designed to expand the possibilities of visible light emission. Founder and CEO Mike Krames will present the technology and supporting experimental results at the International Workshop on Nitride Semiconductors (IWN 2026) in Kumamoto, Japan, on November 12.

GaN-based III-nitride semiconductors revolutionized lighting through the development of efficient blue LEDs. Yet the GaN crystal lattice imposes fundamental constraints on extending this technology to longer visible wavelengths, particularly green and red.

Native InGaN changes that foundation. By engineering single-crystal InGaN with an expanded in-plane lattice parameter, Opnovix opens new degrees of freedom in active-region composition, strain, and device design.

Native InGaN layers with InN mole fractions up to 14% have been grown using industry-standard MOCVD. X-ray reciprocal-space mapping confirms the engineered lattice expansion and intended strain relaxation, while the layers maintain smooth, planar surfaces suitable for subsequent epitaxy. In matched experiments, quantum wells grown on Native InGaN show photoluminescence redshifts of up to approximately 80 nm compared with equivalent structures grown on GaN. The platform also offers the potential to achieve a given emission wavelength at higher growth temperatures, an important consideration for material quality.

GaN made the blue LED revolution possible, but it need not set the limits of what comes next

Dr. Michael Krames, Founder & CEO of Opnovix

“GaN made the blue LED revolution possible, but it need not set the limits of what comes next,” said Krames, Founder and CEO of Opnovix. “Native InGaN gives us a fundamentally different starting point: engineering the lattice to serve the device, rather than the other way around.”

Opnovix is advancing Native InGaN toward high-efficiency, low-droop blue LEDs, green and red III-nitride emitters, and new visible laser wavelengths. Longer-term opportunities include integrated RGB VCSEL arrays for advanced displays and photonic systems.
